Spring Festival of the Baroque

Friday 31st March – Sunday 2nd April 2017

In celebration of our 70th anniversary year, we are launching a Spring Festival of events with a Baroque theme, bringing a weekend of outstanding Baroque music making to Cheltenham.

We are immensely proud to have launched a new singing competition on Friday 31st March 2017, the aim of which is to discover and encourage new young singers of talent and provide them with an opportunity to perform before an audience and a panel of renowned professional judges (Catherine Bott, Peter Savidge and David Crown). The winner will also have the opportunity to perform with the Cheltenham Bach Choir and a professional orchestra. The competition is open to young professional singers from all voice registers who are aged 28 or under on 31st March 2017. Full details are available on our singing competition page. Please note that entry for this year is now closed.

On Saturday 1st April we begin our concerts for 2017 with one of the greatest choral works ever written, Bach’s majestic St Matthew Passion. It stands as a monument to the genius of the composer, and is one of the most dramatic and beautiful oratorios in the repertoire. Our performance, sung in English, will feature stunning young soloists Rosalind Coad (soprano), Annie Gill (mezzo-soprano), William Wallace (tenor), Nick Pritchard (tenor) as the Evangelist, Nick Merryweather (bass) as Christus and Morgan Pearse (bass).

The Musical and Amicable Society, an orchestra of some of the best Baroque instrumentalists in the country, will accompany the choir as we bring to life the extraordinary emotional scope of the work. From the reflective chorales to the baying of the mob, this will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of Cheltenham’s musical year.

Join us on Sunday 2nd April for a recital by Benjamin Baker of Bach’s Partitas for Solo Violin, a repertoire of the most exquisite beauty. Benjamin Baker is one of the country’s best up-and-coming young violinists, a member of the Young Classical Artists Trust and a winner of numerous prizes and awards. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear him perform Bach’s masterpiece for unaccompanied violin!
